A new nature-based wellness experience has arrived at Gwinganna, brought to life by the gentle hum and natural rhythms of more than 100,000 honeybees.

An Australian first for wellness retreats, the Healing Bee Hut is a handcrafted hexagonal sanctuary integrated with a thriving bee colony, offering guests a unique opportunity to slow down, become still and experience the restorative presence of bees.

The Healing Bee Hut is the second experience in Gwinganna’s growing collection of nature-based wellness immersions, following the introduction of Mountain Bathing. Both experiences have been supported by the City of Gold Coast’s Nature-Based Tourism Grant and reflect Gwinganna’s commitment to exploring the connection between nature and wellbeing.

Inside the Healing Bee Hut

A dedicated beehive is safely integrated beneath the hut, allowing guests to experience the colony without direct contact with the bees.

Once inside, guests can settle into the space and experience the gentle vibration of the hive, its rhythmic hum, natural warmth and subtle honeyed aroma. Together, these sensory elements create a deeply calming environment designed to encourage stillness, grounding and connection with the natural world.

Hut craftsman Willow Hankinson explains:

“Bees can have a positive impact on human health and the hut can amplify these through the deep humming sound, which creates a state of deep relaxation; vibration, which can assist with grounding and emotional wellbeing; the warmth of the hive for its comforting effect; and the hive air and honey scent.”

The subtle and constant vibration created by thousands of bees is one of the most fascinating elements of the experience. The rhythmic sound of the colony creates an immersive natural soundscape, inviting the nervous system to settle and the mind to become quiet.

“This is a unique opportunity for our guests to experience the quiet power of nature’s tiniest healers,” says Gwinganna General Manager Melanie James.

“Bees are such an important part of the world’s ecosystem, and here at Gwinganna, our hives not only produce our own honey but also help pollinate the beautiful organic fruit and vegetables we grow and serve.”
